Urban Edge – Inspiration from the Future of Cities
How are cities around the world reimagining inclusion, innovation, and human-centred design?
Here is a standout example that inspires us on our path to a digital and inclusive Europe.

➡️ What if our cities could be smelled, not just seen? In her artistic research project Olfactory Mapping, Canadian artist and researcher Diane Borsato invited participants to walk through urban spaces guided only by their sense of smell. From market stalls to hidden green spaces and forgotten alleys, the project revealed how much of a city’s identity is shaped by its scent—a sensory layer often overlooked in urban design and planning.
Imagine if cities mapped not only traffic, noise, or pollution, but also smell. Could scent-based data enhance tourism, retail experiences, or even mental wellbeing? Could it reshape how we design more human-centred, immersive cities?
